For over 150 years, the Principality of Monaco has chosen to adapt its town planning to the small size of its 2 km² territory. In particular, the scarcity of available land has led the Principality to gradually expand over the sea. In 2015 a new project of urbanization at sea was decided. It consists of a 6 hectare area with a strong ambition for sustainable development and environmental protection.
